3 Sparking Water Myths Debunked

30 Apr 2017 / 0 Comments / in Statis Blog/by admin

In a bid to kick the habit of drinking sugary carbonated drinks, many Australians turned to sparkling water as a healthy alternative.  Sparkling mineral water is basically water collected from a spring, which contains naturally occurring minerals. Carbon dioxide is then pumped through the mineral water to create the fizzy, bubbling effect.

While it’s yet to trump the sales of soft drinks, its growing popularity has sparked a lot of talk. Some true, some false, but whom do we really believe?

Sparkling Water Myths

We’ve taken the three most common sparkling water myths and debunked them for you!

  1. Sparkling water does NOT induce bone problems

Bone mineral density depletion has been shown to affect those who consume cola-flavoured soft drinks several times a week. However, it’s thought the high levels of caffeine and phosphoric acid in these drinks are the reason behind the health risk. Luckily for sparkling water advocates, it contains neither of these.

Sparkling water has actually been proven to benefit our body’s calcium retention. Mineral-rich carbonated drinks balances acidity in the body, which consequently allows the bones to retain calcium.

So for now, we can sit back, relax and enjoy a sparkling mineral water without watching our bones turn to dust.

…but what about our teeth?

Studies are mostly inconclusive, however it’s believed sparkling water has no dramatic effect on tooth decay. However, flavoured sparkling water is proven to have the same effects on teeth as juice. Meaning it’s best to stick with the refreshing, unflavoured stuff! In comparison to sugary carbonated drinks, it’s basically mouthwash. Well, not quite.

  1. It CAN cause stomach ulcers

While our bones might be strong, unfortunately our stomachs could be at risk from consuming too much sparkling mineral water. The fizzing and bubbling of sparkling water doesn’t end once it leaves the bottle. This reaction caused by carbon dioxide continues inside our stomachs, which can cause a build-up of air. If too much sparkling water is consumed, uncomfortable conditions such as abdominal distension and bloating can occur. In the worst-case scenarios, the stomach can produce too much acid and a peptic ulcer can form on the lining of the stomach.

Although this is a very rare occurrence, it pays to monitor just how much sparkling water you’re drinking. Everything in moderation!

  1. And finally – Is it as healthy as normal water?

Yes and no! While nothing can really replace the life source that is water, sparkling mineral water is considered to be equally as hydrating as regular water.  However, given the effects of excessive carbon dioxide in the stomach, it’s best to stick with the real stuff for the most part! As for it being a healthy alternative for sugary carbonated drinks- absolutely!

There you have it, the myths debunked. Next time you take a swig of your favourite sparkling mineral water, enjoy it!

Coke vs. Pepsi: Which is the Best Cola?

28 Dec 2016 / 0 Comments / in Uncategorized/by admin

For decades, Coca-Cola and Pepsi have been the go-to drink for parties, but one question has been around for more than a century: Coke or Pepsi? What’s the best cola?coke-vs-pepsiWhen we talk about perfect substitutes in microeconomics, the first thought that comes to mind is Coke and Pepsi, since these two taste very similar and have comparable pricing. However, until recently, the market share for Coca-Cola and Pepsi has heavily favoured Coca-Cola in Australia. Henry Lin mentions that “It is estimated that Coca-Cola outsells Pepsi Cola by around three times in Australia and New Zealand supermarkets, and around five to six times in the whole cola market.” on the Economics Student Society of Australia website.

“Coca Cola is consumed by 3,745,000 Australians and 898,000 Kiwis in any given seven days” according to Michele Levine, CEO, Roy Morgan Research, “with other Coke sub-brands also among the top five soft drinks in each country.”

Most people have a preference between Coke and Pepsi, even though a lot of people can’t really tell the difference. Although both drinks have a similar chemical composition, many people maintain strong behavioural preferences towards Coke. In terms of nutritional content, Coke has slightly more sodium, and Pepsi is slightly higher in sugar, calories, and caffeine.

Another reason why Coke wins the cola wars is because Coke’s brand is more valuable. Research by Samuel McClure and Read Montague showed that when “…administering double-blind taste tests. We found that subjects split equally in their preferences for Coke and Pepsi in the absence of brand information.” So even though people can’t really taste the difference, people connect more with Coke as a brand, and hence their preference for Coke wins when selecting the best cola.

“The latest figures from Roy Morgan Research show that consumption of soft drinks has increased year-on-year among a key segment of the Australian population: the under-25s.” You’ll also notice that Coke is more readily available compared to Pepsi. As with Coca-Cola, you’ll find Pepsi at most supermarkets, but Coke can also be bought at almost all major food outlets, food courts, and there are many more vending machines that are exclusive to Coke brands. Many major food outlets like McDonalds, Subway, Nando’s, etc. all sell Coke, but the numbers of major food outlets (like KFC) who sell Pepsi are much smaller. Since Coke is the only option in most food retailers and restaurants, we tend to drink it more, eventually becoming brand loyal.

There are also many other factors that make Coke dominant over Pepsi such as its pricing strategies, marketing, product design, etc.

Statis Beverages are soft drink suppliers in Brisbane, offering Coca Cola and its range of products at wholesale prices to businesses who want to spread the happiness to their customers.

Energy Drinks vs Sports Drinks – What’s the Difference?

19 Oct 2016 / 0 Comments / in Uncategorized/by admin

Both sports drinks and energy drinks have enormous popularity in Australia, with over 1.5 million Australians buying one or the other. Powerade, Red Bull, Mother, Monster and Gatorade are all household names, often seen at any sporting event or in an office fridge. However, many people treat sports and energy drinks as interchangeable, when they actually have very different ingredients and effects on the body.

cans of red bull

Ingredients

To highlight the differences between energy drinks and sports drinks, we’ll compare the ingredients of Red Bull and Powerade.

The energy drink that started the trend, Red Bull, contains B vitamins, taurine, carbohydrates (sucrose and glucose) and most importantly, caffeine. Powerade similarly contains carbohydrates and B vitamins, but with sodium and several sources of electrolytes: mono-potassium phosphate, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride.

We can see that the key difference between energy drinks and sports drinks is that an energy drink such as Red Bull contains a significant quantity of caffeine (32mg per 100mL), while electrolytes are the defining characteristic of Powerade and similar sports drinks. But what effect do these ingredients have on the body?

Physical Product Benefits

The caffeine in energy drinks provide a surge in mental energy and alertness, which is why they are often used much like coffee to sharpen the mind and stave off fatigue. However, while energy drinks do contain some carbohydrates, they are not well-suited to physical activity, as the caffeine rush may lead exercisers to push past their physical boundaries, potentially leading to injury.

Sports drinks are the much better option for exercise. The electrolytes they contain feed muscles to keep them working at peak performance, and replace chemicals lost during strenuous activity. However, while tasty, sports drinks aren’t required to fuel everyday activities, so they’re best saved for prolonged periods of exercise.

Taken in moderation, sports and energy drinks can be a helpful and delicious addition to your week.

Purchase Wholesale Energy and Sports Drinks

As more and more people come to understand the difference between sports and energy drinks, companies would do well to add both ranges to their shelves. Statis Beverages provide wholesale distribution of a huge variety of non-alcoholic drinks to businesses in and around Brisbane. Whether you own a store, cafe or other business, we have the solution for you.

The differences between Powerade and Gatorade

23 Nov 2015 / 0 Comments / in Uncategorized/by admin

When looking to buy energy drinks, many people don’t realise the subtle differences between market leaders Gatorade and Powerade. Both drinks are extremely popular, especially among the young and sporty. They all but dominate the energy drinks market, with Powerade having 58% market share and Gatorade right behind at 33%.

Energy drinks are most popular in sports such as baseball, rugby union and Australian rules football, with over 20% of the players of these sports regularly consuming energy drinks. People choose Powerade and Gatorade when playing sport both to get a sugar hit for energy, and to replace vitamins, minerals and electrolytes lost during exercise.Powerade vs Gatorade

Vitamins, minerals and electrolytes

When we exercise, we sweat out a lot more than just water. Potassium and sodium – required for maintaining water levels in your blood – are also lost, and need to be replaced. While both Gatorade and Powerade have fairly similar potassium levels, Gatorade’s higher sodium content makes it better for replenishing these electrolytes and preventing muscle cramping.

Flavours and mixture variety

Gatorade and Powerade both offer lots of choice in flavours and mixtures. Powerade’s most popular flavours include Orange, Sour Melon, Strawberry Lemonade and Mountain Berry, while Gatorade has Lemon Lime, Cool Blue, Fruit Punch and Glacier Freeze.

For the health-conscious, Powerade offers special mixtures with zero sugar. Gatorade similarly has low-sugar beverages, as well as drinks with much more sodium and potassium for endurance athletes.

Sugar types

While both brands have similar quantities of sugar per serving, they do contain different sugar types. Gatorade contains a mix of simple sugars, such as sucrose and dextrose, for easy absorption. Powerade gets its sugar from high-fructose corn syrup, which in large amounts has been linked to weight gain and other health risks.

Buy wholesale energy drinks

While Gatorade seems more beneficial for nutrient replenishment, Powerade’s sweeter taste maintains its popularity. To add these drinks to your store shelves, check out Statis Beverages, Brisbane’s best soft drink distributors.

Coca Cola’s greatest marketing campaign

27 Oct 2015 / 0 Comments / in Statis Blog/by admin

share coke

The ‘Share a Coke’ campaign developed by Ogilvy Sydney was a simple idea: to make Coca Cola bottles and cans bearing common first names on the label instead of the standard logo. This basic concept soon became an international hit used to sell Coca Cola in over 70 countries, including England, Turkey, China and America.

In the summer of the campaign’s release, Coca Cola sold 250 million bottles and cans in Australia, and similar results have since been seen all over the world.

What made the campaign so successful?

Previous Coca Cola campaigns such as ‘Bottle Blast’ were great at showcasing people’s love of Coke, but didn’t affect sales. For ‘Share a Coke’, the key factor to the campaign’s success was personalisation.

In the same way that we’re more likely to open letters and emails addressed to our names rather than “the homeowner” or “valued customer”, as customers we are naturally drawn to products that feel tailored to us. Even more powerfully, the personalisation and nature of ‘Share a Coke’ encourages shoppers to buy drinks with our friends’ or families’ names on them as gifts to show we care.

Not many companies could economically substitute one packaging design for 150, but Coca Cola has the machinery to make it cost-effective for both them and their soft drink distributors. This means they didn’t have to raise the price of their drinks to cover costs, and so are seen as doing something nice for customers while asking for nothing in return.

Australia and Coca Cola

For decades, Coca Cola has been the go-to drink for parties and gatherings of any size. This is especially true in Queensland’s hot and humid climate where people need refreshment all year-round.

If you saw your or a loved one’s name on a bottle of Coke, wouldn’t you consider purchasing it?

Statis Beverages are Brisbane-based drinks suppliers, offering wholesale soft drinks to businesses who want to spread the happiness to their customers.

10 Tips for Selecting a Reliable Drink Supplier in Australia

08 Sep 2014 / 0 Comments / in Statis Blog/by admin

10 Tips for Selecting a Reliable Drink Supplier in Australia

Getting what you need for your Brisbane convenience store, restaurant or other hospitality business, can be a challenge. When looking for a drink supplier that can provide the beverages you need consistently, reliably, and at the best possible price, it helps if you do your homework upfront and follow these tips for selecting the most suitable one from the start.

1 – Decide what’s most important

Make a list of the factors you consider most important in your beverage supplier. For most Brisbane businesses this will be a combination of price, payment terms, quality, specific delivery schedules, packaging, and other factors.

2 – Shop around and compare

Do your homework. Check with a number of drink suppliers how they stack up on the factors you consider most important. Don’t assume that they are all the same. You may not find one that scores 10 out of 10 on every factor but it will help you narrow down your shortlist.

3 – Get it in writing

Don’t just take the supplier’s word for it – gather pricelists with terms and conditions included and compare them like for like.

4 – Don’t decide PURELY on price

Price is always important, but if it is very low there may be other factors that will negatively impact your business – such as a poor delivery schedule or poor quality goods. The supplier may also charge for delivery to make up shortfalls. Find this out before deciding.

5 – Speak to the boss

Make sure that you deal with someone who has the authority to grant discounts or special deals. Identify who has this authority and then talk with them directly rather than through a third party.

6 – Negotiate

If you are buying in bulk, be prepared to negotiate on price with your shortlisted suppliers – this can save you valuable dollars in the future.

7 – Check response times

You want to be sure that if you have a problem, it will be dealt with quickly. If your initial requests for information are not dealt with promptly it is unlikely this will improve when you are a customer.

8 – Ask for promotional materials

Even if the supplier cannot move on price, ask what else they can throw into the deal. Promotional material is usually in good supply – try to secure as much of this as possible.

9 – Check reputations

Word of mouth travels fast – especially bad reputations. Check what the experiences of other local businesses have been with a particular supplier. This should give you an indication of its dependability.

10 – Include the details in your contract

Details like times of deliveries are important to your business. Drinks need time to cool down in the heat of a Brisbane summer, so ensure that your beverage supplier commits to getting them to you at suitable times.

Finally, note that, while the largest drink suppliers may provide the best prices, dealing with suppliers that monopolise your local area puts you in a poor bargaining position. You can find more tips on choosing the right supplier for your business here.
